Hamstring Tension Test

Method

  1. Patient is lying supine on a firm table, head back and arms across the chest. Th hip is passively flexed until the thigh is vertical (use the spirit level if available). Maintain this thigh position throughout the test, with the opposite leg in a fully extended position.
  2. Lift one leg at a time so that the Femur is at 90° to the surface the patient is lying on.
  3. Keep the foot of the leg being tested relaxed, while actively straightening the lower leg until the point when the Femur begins to move from the vertical position. The angle of knee flexion represents hamstring tightness. It can be assessed visually or measured using a goniometer with extended arms and a spirit level (optional).
  4. Assess the force required to produce an effective range of motion.
